This dystopian masterpiece serves as a chilling, cautionary warning against the dangers of totalitarianism, pervasive state surveillance, and the manipulation of truth. The rise of authoritarianism in contemporary society with its 'alternative facts' and 'fake news’ uneasily echoes Orwell’s ‘doublethink' and ‘newspeak’ almost eighty years on from the first publication of his visionary work.
This production in a recent adaptation by Nick Hern is performed by a dynamic ensemble from City Academy.
