Three Years and Counting

MENA Arts UK

MENA Arts UK are turning three and invite you to join them in coming together in honour of their artistic community.

We are turning THREE and now more than ever, we believe that it is important for our artistic community to come together.

Every day members of our community with ties to MENA+ counties wake up with devastating news from the countries they’re connected to and beyond.

This reinforces our mission to bring these communities together and foster communication and community through the arts.

Join us in celebrating our incredible MENA Arts UK community where we will reflect on everything we have achieved together as well as look forward to the future.

Doors will open from 4pm.

This event will kick off at 4:30pm with a panel But You Don't Look Middle Eastern? 2.0

Back in 2020, we held our first town hall with the prompt But You Don't Look Middle Eastern? which sparked important conversations and fueled our steering group to do the work we believe our creative community here in the UK needs.

Three years later, we want to use this opportunity to look back and see where we're at. What has changed? What hasn't? And what work still needs to be done?

The panel will be chairedby Samira Ahmed. Further panelists TBA.

Guests will have the opportunity to network & get refreshements followed by live music by Asya Satti.

ABOUT

MENA ARTS UK

We are a UK-based not-for-profit Arts organisation for professionals who work in Live & Recorded Arts and are connected to the Middle East, North Africa or the surrounding area.

An ward winning journalist and broadcaster, Samira Ahmed presents Front Row on Radio 4 and
Newswatch on BBC1. She was named British Broadcasting Press Guild audio presenter of the
year in 2020. Her acclaimed three-part BBC4 documentary series Art of Persia (2020) was one of the first major Western tv series to be filmed in Iran. Samira is a trustee of the Centre for Women's Justice, on the advisory board of the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford,  and an honorary fellow of St Edmund Hall, Oxford.

Asya Satti’s tapestry of global sounds was weaved subconsciously when she spent her formative years travelling between Sweden, Egypt and the UK, all of which added to her innate love of Sudanese roots music. As she focused on her own artistic style she realised she wanted to unite Sudanese Sufi music with Western and Arabic sounds in a way that was both cohesive and respected each cultural element. Working with Yaz Fentazi helped her to unlock that sound, and he has become a regular collaborator throughout her debut EP.
