CLIMATE CHANGE THEATRE ACTION 2023: ALL GOOD THINGS MUST BEGIN
Equity For a Green New Deal
An evening of play readings and a call to climate action.
As part of the 2023 Climate Change Theatre Action festival, Theatro Technis will host an evening of script-in-hand readings of 9 new short plays. The programme includes playwrights from Singapore, Brazil, Jordan, the US and the UK.
We will also hear from Make My Money Matter, a UK-based organisation working to transform the financial system to put people and planet on a par with profit.
9 short plays have been selected for this event by Yasmin Hafesji, Helena Wilson, Marlie Haco, Nathan Ellis and Tamsin Ellis.
Yasmin is a theatre director from London, and was Associate Director at the Gate Theatre from 2020 - 2022. Helena is an actor and co-chair of Equity for a Green New Deal. Marlie is a theatre director and dramaturg. She runs the production company Double Telling and is on attachment at Hampstead Theatre. Nathan is a playwright and screenwriter. Tamsin is an
NHS GP. She is also director of Greener Practice and an associate at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare.
ABOUT
Climate Change Theatre Action is a worldwide festival of short plays about the climate crisis presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings. Every other year, 50 professional playwrights, representing all inhabited continents as well as several cultures and Indigenous nations, are commissioned to write five-minute plays about an aspect of the climate
crisis based on a prompt.
This year, the theme is ALL GOOD THINGS MUST BEGIN - a prompt inspired by the journal entry of American science fiction writer Octavia Butler. Butler was incredibly prescient, writing about extremism, racial justice, and climate change some 30 years ago. While the worlds of her novels depict the violent challenges of today’s interlocking crises, her protagonists remain devoted to thriving, to achieving survival beyond the destructive and oppressive societies they come from. The climate crisis
demands the same kind of imaginative leap: we will create a just and regenerative world only if we dare to imagine it first, and use that vision to guide us through the difficulties.

Equity for a Green New Deal is a grassroots network of the performing arts trade union Equity. Since its inception in 2021, Equity for a Green New Deal has secured the move of over £120m of union pensions to a more sustainable fund, and is currently collaborating with industry leaders on a robust Green Rider for film and television production. In the theatre sector,
members of Equity for a Green New Deal have published a feedback report on the Theatre Green Book.
The network is campaigning for Theatre Green Book standards to be embedded in theatre contracts, for wider uptake of the Book as it stands, and for the Book's next draft to make more radical, governance-related recommendations.
