For The Love Of Cyprus — is back!

with Martha & Eve

In celebration of the music traditions of their parent culture, who better to explore Cyprus’s culture and passion than the acclaimed music duo Martha and Eve.

From George Michael to Manos Loizos, Martha and Eve shine a spotlight on the most famous Cypriot composers and chart the 100-year journey of the music known across the diaspora as the Great Greek Songbook. Proudly presenting the music, stories and images of their parent culture — the nostalgic repertoire so familiar to British Cypriots — they trace a century of song from its earliest roots to the present day.

The 100-year journey

1910s — The urban song. Evocative music from the urban towns of Greece and Turkey, where the Songbook begins.
1940s–1960s — The Europeanised years. Vintage Greek song, glamorous and bittersweet — reminiscent of and parallel to the Piaf and Dietrich era.
1970s — Modern Greek music. The sound of a new generation, carrying the tradition forward.
Martha & Eve — Seven albums of their own. The duo’s notable, impressive body of original songs and their lasting contribution to the UK and world-music landscape.

Each night, a different Cypriot guest joins Martha & Eve.

Chef Tonia Buxton (Thursday), filmmakers Cey Sesiguzel (Friday) and Athena Mandis (Saturday), and actor Peter Polycarpou (Saturday). Four remarkable voices, one shared heritage, come celebrate the spirit of Cyprus.

Martha and Eve, a.k.a. Donna & Kebab have released 4 albums plus DVD video ‘Live at The Hackney Empire’. They’ve presented full length theatre shows both nationally and internationally in Cyprus, Syria, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, London’s Royal Festival Hall , Purcell Rooms, Bloomsbury Theatre and Hackney Empire as well as residencies at London’s Jazz Café, Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho and theatres throughout the UK including Leicester, Birmingham, Brighton, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Tonia Buxton

Greek-Cypriot chef, broadcaster and author, and one of Britain's best-known Cypriot faces — star of Discovery's My Greek Kitchen and My Cypriot Kitchen and a regular on Saturday Kitchen, Lorraine and Sunday Brunch. A global ambassador for Hellenic cuisine who brings the warmth and flavour of Cyprus to everything she does.

Athena Mandis

(Saturday)

Award-winning filmmaker and Senior Lecturer in Film Practice at Queen Mary University of London, whose work explores migration, memory and identity — including her forthcoming documentary about Martha & Eve themselves. She began her journey in theatre with the David Glass Ensemble.

Mike Minas

Bozouki

Mike Minas is a Professional bozouki player and musician. He has played with George Dalaras and Glykeria and other well-known singers and musicians, including the great Greek icon, Marinella.

Eren Arken

Vocals

Originally from Kyrenia, Cyprus, Eren moved to London at 16 to pursue his passion for the performing arts. A graduate of Emil Dale Academy, he has also trained with the prestigious Jasmin Vardimon Company. Eren is thrilled to be working so closely with his community in this production and wants to share thanks to his agent, friends & family for their continuous love & support.

Cey Sesiguzel

(Friday)

British Turkish-Cypriot filmmaker and writer-director of the award-winning documentary The Divided Island — a moving, even-handed portrait of Cyprus told through the personal stories of both its communities. A north-London storyteller driven by reconciliation and shared heritage.

Peter Polycarpou

(Saturday)

One of Britain's most distinguished stage and screen actors — and Eve's brother — an original cast member of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, and star of Evita, Oklahoma! and Birds of a Feather. His Olivier-nominated turn in Oslo and his early plays about Cypriot identity, first staged here at Theatro Technis, make his return especially fitting.

Emmet O’ Connor

Keyboard

The Irish composer keyboard player Emmet O’ Connor who was - featured here recently on Eves album launch - is also thrilled to be on board working with Martha and Eve again on this music which has captured his island spirit.

Kerry Kyriacos Michael

Director

Kerry Kyriacos Michael, a second-generation North London Cypriot, was Artistic Director & Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Stratford East from Sept 2004 to Sept 2017. For 13 years, he forged the Theatre’s commitment to develop new work and provide a platform for under-represented voices in the Arts. He is now the Creative Director of Theatro Technis. In 2018, Kerry won Artistic Director Of The Year at the OFF WEST END Awards. In 2019 he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London, and in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the Arts. Kerry’s Theatre directing credits include new plays, musicals and operas, including Paul Sirett's play Jamaica House, Tanika Gupta's play, Love and Stuff and Tariq Jordan's play, Ali and Dahlia. Other work includes John Adam’s I Was Looking At The Ceiling and Then I Saw The Sky (co-production with Barbican), The Harder They Come, (transferred to the West End; tours of Canada and USA), Ray Davies’ Come Dancing (Winner What’s On Stage Best New Musical) and a new production of The Who’s Tommy - embedding creative BSL, Captioning and Audio Description. (Winner UK Theatre Awards Best Touring Production 16/17). As a creative producer he has won two Oliviers and had seven further nominations.

Elena Yianni

Associate Director

Elena Yianni is a Greek Cypriot Theatre and Film Director working with bold new writing by and about underrepresented voices. She holds a First-Class BA (Hons) in Applied Theatre and is an alumna of the Young Vic’s Fresh Direction Programme and the Lyric Hammersmith Young Associate Programme. She is drawn to stories about people - exploring identity, culture, politics and the realities of life today - as well as stories with a thread of hope. Her practice is shaped by care, curiosity and collaboration. Recent credits include Swedish Meatballs (Theatre503) and Ghost Light (The Hope Theatre).
